Bad Winners

With an 82-79 record in 1973 the New York Mets won the National League's eastern division. Their's was the worst winning percentage for a team to advance into the baseball postseason in the history of the game at that time. It's still a record that stands.

That could change come this Sunday when the major league regular season comes to a close. The San Diego Padres are sitting at 79-79 with four games left in the season. Last night they clinched the National League's western division crown while evening their record up at the 79's. They must win three out of their next four to tie the '73 Mets with 82 wins. Four straight wins to close out the season will save them from ignonimity.
