Average team runs per game in the American League in 2005 was 4.76. This was the league's lowest total since the 1993 season when teams averaged 4.71 runs per game. You have to go back to the 1987 season to find the next season that teams averaged more than 4.76 runs per game. During the so-called "Year of the Homerun" teams average 4.90 runs per game in American League ballparks.

In the National League average team runs per game was 4.45. You'd only have to go back as far as 2002 to find that NL clubs averaged 4.45 runs per game during that season. And before that 1992 is the first season we find with a lower average than 2005 and 2002 when teams averaged 3.88 runs per game.

Perhaps 2005 will prove to be the year when Major League Baseball began to regress back to its runs per game mean.
