You've heard his name for years out of the Philadelphia front office but he's never really talked about in terms of getting a General Manager position even though that's his stated desire. Here's a short article on Ruben Amaro Jr., assistant GM of the Philadelphia Phillies. He's been in the front office with the club since 1998 and has recently interviewed, unsuccessfully, with the Orioles for a front office position.

Amaro has dealt more with the business side of baseball for the Phillies while fellow assistant Mike Arbuckle has made a name for himself in the draft. The bonus for new GM Pat Gillick will be that Amaro and Arbuckle will provide him with a solid breadth of knowledge and continuity as he steps into the fourth general managership of his career.
